My Manuscript Wish List
Liza Kaplan, Philomel Books/Penguin Random House
I am focused on YA and middle grade literary fiction with commercial appeal and am seeking really superb literary writing, distinct POV/narrative voice, and emotionally compelling character-driven stories with an edge, across both contemporary and historical. I’m most interested in realistic fiction in YA—weird, darker, complex themes of teens going through life-altering experiences are welcome. In regards to middle grade, I’m again looking for realistic fiction as well as stories with just a touch of magic or other-worldliness.
Specific ideas of interest include stories that tackle themes of family dynamics; body image and/or identity issues; a veteran homecoming story; performing arts; multicultural (or outsider) stories; a story that highlights the LGBTQ experience; a weird and/or powerful short story collection (fiction or nonfiction); a story that employs a nontraditional format of storytelling (verse, epistolary, etc.).
