Beaming Books

My Manuscript Wish List

I am an acquisitions editor at Beaming Books, an imprint of 1517 Media. I acquire and edit picture books (fiction and nonfiction) and will take on selective middle grade nonfiction. I enjoy working with experienced and debut writers and illustrators.

Beaming Books publishes high-quality children’s books that help kids thrive in every part of who they are—emotionally, socially, and spiritually. With topics ranging from self-esteem to kindness, ethics, and faith, our books are designed to spark the imagination and equip kids and families to live full and flourishing lives, together.

Specific story ideas I'm interested in seeing in my inbox in 2022:

  • funny books! I really want to see funny stories with heart.
  • author-illustrator submissions (text-alone is fine, but I want to see more illustrated submissions too.)
  • character-driven story about an adoptee, written by an adoptee (featuring a child character, not an animal.)
  • Winter or summer solstice story
  • Story about experiencing anger and dealing with it in a constructive way
  • Fresh take on the story of Jesus (e.g. Jesus as liberator! Jesus as an oppressed person, etc.)
  • Baptism-themed manuscript (prefer broad/inclusive takes)
  • Saint Nicholas picture book biography
  • religious holiday books (Christian or other religions.)
  • story about dealing with change
  • interfaith community/friendship story
  • A story about doing the "right thing" even when it's hard or you're the only one
  • Story about hope in hard times
  • Story featuring disabled main character (by an author who is disabled)
  • Joy as a revolutionary act

General things I'm looking for in submissions:

  • social and emotional learning (SEL) themes
  • inspiring picture book biographies about lesser known people in history who made a positive difference in the world
  • humorous stories with heart (make me laugh AND learn something meaningful!)
  • stories that break gender norms and challenge toxic masculinity
  • books by BIPOC and other  underrepresented creators
  • strong character driven stories with positive messages about a child's holistic thriving
  • dealing with challenging experiences: conflict, fears, grief, bullying, difficult times, moving away, divorce, death, mental illness, etc.
  • sophisticated, deeply theological, lyrical manuscripts from a progressive Christian perspective
  • spirituality and faith practices for kids with a grace-filled, open-minded approach.

Topics or themes I’m specifically not interested in right now:

  • Pandemic themes
  • Princesses/knights/castle stories
  • Re-tellings of Bible stories (unless it’s a really, really fresh take)
  • American patriotic themes
  • Magic or fantasy
  • Board books
  • Welcoming a new baby
  • Craft or activity books
  • Stories without a strong hook or underlying concept that relates to our mission of helping kids thrive
