My Manuscript Wish List®
I am open to queries from the 15th to 30th of each month and do not accept queries via email.
I seek adult literary and upmarket fiction with propulsive plots, distinct characters, lyrical prose, and imaginative genre inflections. I love books that unapologetically challenge and deconstruct narrative conventions—books that take risks. I appreciate a careful, restrained hand with gently fantastical elements, one that encourages the reader to interrogate the liminal. Above all, I crave confident, stylish writing and wholly unique concepts that haunt me long after I’ve finished the final page.
I would love to see the following in my query box, but I’m always open to being surprised:
For fiction:
- Propulsive literary fiction with a strong, seismic hook and expertly crafted tension written in stylish prose–let her chew on and savor every word.
- Upmarket fiction with a startling, lightly speculative concept filled with intentional characterization, insightful and nuanced socio-cultural commentary, fresh negotiations of timeless themes, and distinct emotional resonance.
- Work that revels in genre play—if the project is best described as “X meets Y with strains of Z,” consider her interest piqued, and bonus points for intermedial comp titles.
- Notes of grounded, lush, and atmospheric magical realism, wherein the potential for the fantastic exists just beyond our vision.
- Select historical fiction that foregrounds historically marginalized perspectives and under-explored locales.
For narrative non-fiction:
- Travel narratives that depict remote locations and intentional, thought-provoking encounters.
- Aesthetic-rich projects that orbit the spheres of wellness, holistic medicine, and women’s health.
- Work that marries a warm, rich storyteller’s register with naturalist themes.
Anti-MSWL:
- Fantasy or science fiction of any kind.
- Highly commercial fiction: romance, slasher-horror, military or espionage thrillers, beach reads, etc.
- Post-apocalyptic or dystopian narratives.
- The young man’s odyssey (think Kerouac for the Gen X or Millennial reader).
- Tediously traditional Westerns.
- Books about wars throughout the twentieth century (please, no more narratives set during WWI, WWII, or the Vietnam War; I’m begging you).
- Any work for young adult audiences and younger—I am exclusively focusing on work for adult readers at this time.
- Work that is reminiscent of: A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, Normal People by Sally Rooney, Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel.
Fun facts about me:
Professionally irrelevant but potentially charming tidbits:
- I have called four different countries home, with each location being, coincidentally, coastal: USA, Scotland, The Gambia, and Newfoundland.
- I confess to being a serial hobbyist—watercolor painting, mounted archery, and fly fishing are a few of my recent quests.
- I am of the very firm opinion that the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy is Elizabeth Swann’s story, and I will die on that hill.
- My horse Cooper is much more interesting than I am. His antics include but are not limited to drinking a tipple of brandy from a cup, wearing a variety of absurd hats, and scheming various clever methods to steal my snacks.
