Whitney Ross

Irene Goodman Literary Agency

My Manuscript Wish List

Before joining Irene Goodman, Whitney worked as an editor at Macmillan for nearly a decade, culminating in her role as a senior editor for Tor Teen, Tor, and Forge. Over the course of her career, Whitney has had the pleasure of editing many talented authors, including Susan Dennard, Cora Carmack, Eric Van Lustbader, Steven Erikson, Katie McGarry, Ann Aguirre, Dan Wells, and Stacey Kade.

Whitney represents middle grade, young adult, and adult fiction across all genres, with an emphasis on historical, SF & fantasy, romance, and contemporary fiction. She is also open to non-fiction submissions in the areas of design, cooking, and fashion.

Whitney loves to read novels set in unusual time periods and locations, whether that involves a fantastical element or not. She is rarely able to resist the trickster king motif, and has a weakness for read-between-the-lines subtle romances. Yet she's constantly surprised by books not on her "wish list," and is always open to stories with compelling characters and emotionally involving plotlines.

Whitney earned her B.A. in English Literature, a B.S. in Entrepreneurship, and an M.S. in Publishing. In her spare time, she enjoys competitive sports such as skiing and shopping, and tasting wines with her winemaker husband.

Favorite sub-genres:
I'd like the next...

I'd love the next book inspired by k-dramas, both the historical dramas and contemporary ones. Bring me a YA Descendants of the Sun or Healer and I would be ALL about it! I'm also looking for historical YA & adult fiction set in any time period, whether a fantasy re-imagining or not.

My favorites include...

Young Adult wishlist:

  • lyrical and unique like The Bird and the Sword Chronicles by Amy Harmon
  • gritty and intense, like Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows
  • A re-imagined take on history and mythology, like Robin LaFevers Mortal Heart.
  • Retellings of classics with a twist, like the story of The Titanic found in These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
  • Angsty and romantic like Going too Far by Jennifer Echols
  • Read-between-the-lines passion such as the romance between Fire and Brigan in Fire by Kristin Cashore
  • A bad boy narrator with a heart of gold, like you find in The Curse Workers series by Holly Black

Adult wishlist:

  • Funny and sweet contemporary romance such as The Best Man by Kristan Higgins (my current favorite of hers)
  • Time bending tales with history and a taste of magic, like Outlander or The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley
  • Original and compelling fantasy & SF stories (always with a romance!) such as Troubled Waters by Sharon Shinn, the Innkeeper series by Ilona Andrews, and the Alpha & Omega series by by Patricia Briggs
  • Historical romances with out-of-the-box characters, like the Puritan hero/vigilante in Elizabeth Hoyt’s Thief of Shadows
