The Strothman Agency

My Manuscript Wish List

I represent young adult and middle grade fiction and nonfiction, as well the occasional adult narrative nonfiction project. I am a board member of the Association of American Literary Agents and I serve on the communications and copyright committees. The Strothman Agency has always been committed to advocating for books that matter and I look for books that reflect that mission. I am particularly searching for #ownvoices and inclusive, diverse narratives as well as strong female characters or feminist themes, and QUILTBAG representation. (#ownvoices queries that use the hashtag in the subject lin of their email will be prioritized.) Fiction can shape the way people view the world and make us more empathetic. To that end, I am searching for books with themes that speak to the current political environment. I am especially interested in books about immigration, income inequality, racism, abortion, authoritarian governments, climate change, and civil rights. When I go through my slushpile, I’m mostly looking for uniqueness. I want to see tropes turned on their heads, twists on familiar plots or character archetypes, or a playful take on the usual genre conventions. I value voice slightly more than plot (plot is important too, of course, but plot can be fixed), and love seeing interesting character arcs unfold. I’m open to all YA and MG sub genres. I love the fabulous world building in fantasy, historical fiction and scifi, the chills and twist and turns of thrillers, horror and mysteries, and watching dynamic characters interact in romance, friendship, and family stories. I decide to offer on a project when it makes me feel something. Make my pulse pound, make me laugh, or cry, or get me emotionally invested in a character and I’m in.

Fun facts about me:

Our dog is named after the man who helped officiate our Las Vegas wedding ceremony: Elvis.

On nonfiction side, Lauren looks for all captivating narrative nonfiction for both adult and kidlit audiences and is particularly interested in food writing, science, pop culture, journalism, true crime, memoir, activism, and history. Her dream nonfiction project would be a feminist history of the United States.

At this time I am only accepting submissions for MG and YA fiction through referrals.
