My Manuscript Wish List®

Lauren Spieller is a Literary Agent with Folio Literary Management/ Folio Jr. with a background in literary scouting, editorial consulting, and a whole host of other stuff that isn’t relevant to her MSWL but seemed super interesting at the time. She has a sharp editorial eye and is passionate about author advocacy.

Lauren is seeking Middle Grade, Young Adult, and Adult fiction, as well as platform-driven non-fiction. Whatever the age category or genre, Lauren is passionate about representing diverse and underrepresented voices. She loves a big hook, but is also a sucker for gorgeous writing and distinct voices.

Middle Grade: Lauren is looking for high concept contemporaries, magical fantasy and kid-friendly sci-fi, exciting historical, and spooky horror! She’d also love to see MG graphic novels, especially if it’s set in our real world. A few recent (and a few all time) favorites: Amari and the Night Brothers, King and the Dragonflies, Jonathan Auxier, Kelly Barnhill, and Natalie Lloyd.

Young Adult: Lauren is especially drawn to books with a strong voice and a great hook. She loves fantasy (all types!), contemporary, suspense/thrillers, and horror. She loves smart genre-bending tale, graphic novels, and would love to see more romcoms from underrepresented voices. A few recent (and a few all time) favorites: The Wilder Girls, Loan Le, Tiffany D. Jackson, Maggie Stiefvater, Chloe Gong.

In Adult, Lauren is seeking diverse and female-driven suspense/ thrillers (The Lion’s Den, Lucy Foley, Gillian Flynn, Oyinkan Braithwaite), grounded, upmarket genre fiction (Mexican Gothic, The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires, Hench, The Rook, The Warehouse, The Ten Thousand Doors of January) along with titles like The Vanished Birds and Jade City. She is also seeking hilarious RomComs (Dial A For Aunties, The Hating Game, and Red, White and Royal Blue), and unique non-fiction with an existing platform (Ijeoma Oluo, Jenny Lawson, Lindsey West).

Not A Fit For: women’s fiction, sci-fi (unless it is EXTREMELY character-driven, a la Doctor Who or even Battlestar Galactica), or memoirs. She is also not a good fit for fae or werewolves, but will consider vampires if they are actually scary/dangerous, and tends not to be a good fit for stories in which an animal is the main character or can talk.
