My Manuscript Wish List

IMG_2033Lauren Smulski is an associate editor for Harlequin TEEN. Her author list includes #1 New York Times bestselling YA author duo Sasha Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings, as well as rising stars Laurie Forest (The Black Witch), Summer Heacock (The Awkward Path to Getting Lucky), Amanda Foody (Daughter of the Burning City), Gregory Scott Katsoulis (All Rights Reserved), and Kaitlyn Sage Patterson (The Diminished). Before coming to Harlequin, Lauren interned at Dorchester Publishing and graduated from Pace University with a master’s degree in publishing.

Lauren is seeking young adult novels in the following genres: fantasy, science fiction, classical retellings in a modern setting, issue-driven fiction, epistolary novels, tech-driven thrillers, and original teen superhero stories.

Fun facts about me:

Before publishing, I worked at a winery in upstate New York, and as such, I am a complete wine snob — and by wine snob, I mean that I adore super-sweet, grape-juicy wines from the Finger Lakes.

My cat is named Tybalt. Because, Shakespeare geek. Seeing King Lear at the Globe remains one of my greatest life moments.

I’ve visited more foreign countries (17) than I have U.S. states.

I’m not sure I could live without Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. And I stand by my belief that they are vastly superior when frozen.

I will literally never pass up an opportunity to bake sweet, delicious things, especially cupcakes. I am the unofficial office birthday baker.

I’d like the next…

Guardians of the Galaxy or Star Wars for teens. Give me a fantastic ensemble cast, some aliens, and a galaxy-crossing space adventure, and I’m sold.

…Contemporary YA retelling of Much Ado About Nothing. I’m not much for romance, but I adore the insult-laden, hate-to-love-you relationship between Beatrice and Benedick.

…Epistolary novel tackling tough issues, like Dear Martin or The Innocence Treatment.

…Utterly transporting epic fantasy. Think Throne of GlassA Game of ThronesGracelingSix of CrowsThe Golden CompassWizard’s First RuleThe Name of the Wind, that sort of thing.

My favorites include…

BooksThe Harry Potter series (always) by J. K. Rowling, the His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman, the Black Jewels novels by Anne Bishop, The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, literally anything ever written by Tamora Pierce or Rick Riordan, Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz.

Films: Pride & Prejudice (the Kiera Knightley version — I AM NOT ASHAMED), Memoirs of a GeishaStar Wars, most of the Marvel and DC movies (Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool are pretty high on my list right now), just about any animated Disney movie ever made.

TV Shows: How I Met Your Mother, Game of Thrones, Big Bang Theory, Fringe, Lost, Scorpion, Agents of Shield, Agent Carter (*sob*), Sleepy Hollow, Smallville, iZombie.
