My Manuscript Wish List

I’m Laura Crockett, an associate literary agent at TriadaUS Literary Agency. For more information about the projects I work on, feel free to check out my Publishers Marketplace page. You can also browse my book reviews on my personal blog, Scribbles & Wanderlust. I’m seeking a variety of adult fiction and young adult fiction, and diversity within those categories as well. Let’s dive in!

Adult Fiction: I love character-driven stories first and foremost, with beautiful writing, emotional investment, and interesting, unique circumstances.

In women’s fiction, I’m looking for something heartfelt, with juicy moral dilemmas, or historical with parallel narratives and spotlights on unique points in history. Authors like Jodi Picoult, Kate Morton, Patricia Bracewell, Kate Quinn, and Gayle Forman are great examples of this. I’m also a sucker for humorous, millennial-driven women’s fiction, like Sophie Kinsella, JP Monninger, and Marian Keyes.

With fantasy, I enjoy incredible world-building with lush settings, authentic characterization, historical fantasy, and fantasy inspired by fairytales and other cultures’ mythology. Authors like Erin Morgenstern, Juliet Marillier, Diana Gabaldon, Sarah Beth Durst, Naomi Novik, and Paula Brackston fit the bill.

YA Fiction: Once more, I’m very much a character-driven reader and love to invest my time with the character’s journey and growth. I enjoy commercial and literary, and nearly all genres (though sci-fi and psychological thrillers are not my cup of tea).

YA contemporary realistic fiction that grabs my attention include study abroad experiences, strong female friendships, falling in love, and perseverance with mental health. Books that come to mind include Anna and the French Kiss, When Dimple Met Rishi, Since You’ve Been Gone, What to Say Next, When We Collided, and Fangirl.

In fantasy, I enjoy incredible world-building with lush settings, authentic characterization, historical fantasy, and fantasy inspired by fairytales and other cultures’ mythology. Some of my favorites include The Lie Tree, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Shadowfell, Seraphina, Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, The Star-Touched Queen, and Hunted.

I really enjoy historical fiction in YA as well, especially when they’re focusing on time periods or moments in history we do not see often as readers. Though I’m a sucker for WWII narratives, I want to see more titles like Outrun the Moon (1906 San Francisco earthquake), Traitor Angels (1666 Great Fire of London), Velvet Undercover (WWI female spies), Walk on Earth a Stranger (Oregon Trail/California Gold Rush), and A Mad, Wicked Folly (suffrage movement). Transport me somewhere, sometime, and pull me into the characters’ lives in history.

Will Not Take: nonfiction, memoirs, screenplays, poetry, picture books, illustrated work, graphic novels, thriller, erotica
